Choosing a Health Coach: Top 10 đŸš©Red Flags

A key aspect of a client having success is the relationship you build as a coach/client team. A high value I hold is honesty, which means transparency is key to me in building a good relationship. So an important thing to know is the coaching industry is not as regulated as many other industries. It is hard to put restrictions on the advice or guidance someone gives. However, a coach should never diagnose or treat any medical conditions, mental or physical. So if you are working with a coach that is giving that type of advice, please consult a professional. While we may not have specific regulations when it comes to accreditation or certification, we do have a scope of practice to make sure the safety of the client is first priority.

So today, I wanted to share the TOP 10 RED FLAGS to listen for when choosing a health coach!

đŸš©Diet culture buzz words (examples: detox, cleanse, superfood, fasting, etc.) đŸš©Promises of results without effort

đŸš©Too good to be true quick weight loss

đŸš©Blanket statements

đŸš©Promises of the best kept weight loss secrets đŸš©More bikini pictures than information

đŸš©Requirements to fully cut out food groups or macronutrients

đŸš©Cannot provide any research articles

đŸš©Any required supplements/medications without any medical recommendations or physician approval đŸš©Any required convoluted tracking, steps or expectations

A health coach that is focused on the true pillars of health coaching should be focused on the whole person, and provide sound nutrition education along with behavior change. If the main focus is on your body, weight loss, quick fixes then chances are they are selling a product or trying to sell programs that are not aligned with true health values. So be cautious. It's important to invest in yourself so make sure it's a good investment!
