TOP TEN Diet Culture Myths that You Might Want to Toss Out the Window

My tagline is "Step outside the box, then break it" for a BIG reason! Common diet and food culture myths are probably the thing that get my blood pressure up the most, and I eat red meat often!

I started health coaching in 2018, but my passion for nutrition and destroying diet culture started well before that. During college, I gained a significant amount of weight and for ten years, I did every diet in existence to try and lose weight. I literally would just gain and lose the same 40 pounds over and over again, and I just kept believing I was a failure.

That was until I watched a few food documentaries, and I began to realize we are set up for failure in MULTIPLE ways. Two of my personal values as a human being are truth and freedom, so once I realized all the garbage that was being shoved down my throat, I was ready to change and never feed back into the food & diet culture we are constantly exposed to. That's how I lost 115 pounds and why I became a health coach. I wanted people to have the knowledge and empowerment to make decisions that feel good to them, not what is constantly being put in their faces.

So here are my top 10 (plus one) food / diet myths that annoy me most & I want to get out of your brain because it’s rude diet culture put it there!!

1. Don’t eat past …. Blah blah …. time : if you are feeling physical hunger cues, EAT dude

2. Fat is bad for you, choose low fat or fat free : No, it’s full of extra sugar, you’ll constantly

feel more hungry because your body needs energy… also, your brain needs fat bro

3. Gluten free, organic, all natural are healthier : marketing load of bull, ingredients & nutrition facts are what matters

4. 1200 calories is good for weight loss : this is beyond unhealthy, please don’t follow this early 1900s “calculated” number

5. Calories in, calories out : no, just no. 80% nutrition / 20% diet is legit… you can’t out exercise a bad diet

6. Detox / Cleanse : if you don’t currently have a healthy diet, this can cause toxins to release into your system… plus, most are expensive and/or ridiculous & juicing….. smh

7. Intermittent fasting, keto, low calorie, low fat : just please no

8. Brown rice is better : slightly more nutrient dense, eat some extra veggies with your white rice & watch your portion, now go enjoy that magical

9. Sweet potatoes > White potatoes : the poor, poor potato  …. Depending on your nutrient goals, either potato is fine… please I beg of you stop hating on white potatoes, ya girl loves them

10. Wheat anything is better : nah, unless it is 100% whole wheat/grain. If you see the word enriched on the ingredients, run

And lastly……. The one that kills me the most…

Healthy food is more expensive

Yes, pseudo healthy food is more expensive, that’s called marketing & they want you to spend your money . However, a perfectly healthy diet can be achieved sometimes for even less than a typical diet. Also, secret… if you are eating more nutrient dense foods, you won’t eat as much, won’t stop & grab things, won’t need a coffee pick me up… overall, saving you more money!
